The Myths of Modern Mindfulness:

Implications for Teaching Eco-Awareness

Kristin Barker

Co-founder and Director, One Earth Sangha

Wednesday, July 15

11am - 12pm EDT/ 5pm - 6pm CEDT/ 8am - 9am PDT

Mindfulness has tremendous power to help facilitate collective healing and transformative action. However, research shows that simply being present does not automatically make individuals more eco-friendly. In this session, Kristin will describe myths of modern mindfulness and how they relate to the historical narrowing of the scope of mindfulness to personal stressors (as opposed to collective, societal or global stressers), how this narrowing interferes with the goals of Eco-Awareness, and how teachers can work skillfully with these aspects. Practicing Eco-Awareness requires deliberate turning towards one's own challenging emotions such as eco-anxiety as well as integration with civic and environmental values to move towards transformative action. Specific tips for mindfulness teachers will be given and explored through reflection, discussion, and Q and A.

Your generous donations help us bring these speakers to MBSR/MBCT and MBI professionals interested in bringing Earth Awareness into their lives and teaching.
